Florida Region Sports Club of America (SCCA) is proud to announce the 45th annual running of the Florida Region SCCA National/Rational Race to be held
January 10-12, 2013 at Palm Beach International Raceway, in beautiful Jupiter, Florida. Today this event is called
the Florida Region SCCA Winter Rationals. Rational races incorporates National racers and Regional racers
competing for National points, Regional points and South Atlantic Road Racing Championship (SARRC) points leading to run-off races at
Road America and Roebling Road.
The Florida Region Winter National (Rational) presented by Florida Region SCCA has a long & glorious history.
For many years Florida Region SCCA held the first National race of the year, falling early in January.
This race attracted many drivers from the frozen north to race in warm, sunny South Florida. Some of
the celebrities who participated in Florida Region SCCA Winter National Races included Michael Andretti and John Paul, Jr. competing
in Formula Ford; Lynn St. James in her Cosworth Vega in Showroom Stock, and in the famed Ford Pinto, which is still
running today. Paul Newman raced his GT1 Datsun 510, under his racing alias: PL Newman. At one time
we were sponsor to 40 Formula Fords racing for top honors in a Pro Race event.
Florida Region Sports Club of America is alive and thriving today due to drivers, corner workers,
and devoted volunteers who work together to bring you the best events possible.

Publications Director note:

Hi All,

Just returned from the Wednesday, October 24, 2012 General Membership/Nominations meeting held at the Asian Buffet in Royal Palm Beach, Florida. One hour and fifteen minutes to the north of my home and one hour and fifteen minutes back.  It is now 11:15 PM as I write this and I am due at my day job at 7:30 AM.  I just wanted to share a few things from tonight’s meeting.

This is your club.  We are approx. 1200 members strong, and thirteen (count em:  13) devoted members came to this evenings meeting.  Based on last years numbers, the meeting was held in Royal Palm Beach because that is where our biggest number of meeting attendees originated.

This was a nominations meeting!  You now have until November 10, 2012 to make a nomination to the slate for the Board of Directors that are up for election.  You want to be heard? You can help the club? Now is the time to sign up.  Be active, share best practices, help us to grow, be involved!

I attend three (3) Florida Region SCCA meetings per month along with most of the Board of Directors in order to bring you a quality program.  Please try support us by attending General Membership Meetings or as a guest to our Board of Directors meetings.  Just email me to let me know of your intent to attend a BOD meeting.

Thanks!  -Ellen

Torque: October 2012

October 2012

Congratulations to all who attended our September 2012 event at Homestead-Miami Speedway.  We had a great turn out of cars, members and drivers whom came out to support our region, and several Central Florida workers came to help us put on a nice event.  If you weren’t there, you missed a heck of a time.  I think we all will always remember John Zuccarelli. Regional Executive as Mr. Microphone aka John Z to Control.  Contrary to popular belief, Mike Finn, our beloved Race Director, does not wear a cool suit, he runs the enduros all by himself without out any type of air conditioning, you go Mike!  We are thinking outside the box and held our September General Membership Meeting at the track in the AC.  We are always looking for your questions, comments (good or bad) to bring to you the best possible.

If you think you are seeing alot of us multi-tasking at the track, you are absolutely right!  It was suggested by our higher ups that we have back-ups to all the positions that we work during our events.   So if you Lori Vitagliano at registration in the AM and then see her again on pit road, or tech in the afternoon, no you are not seeing double.  Jay Vitagliano, who holds a National Tech license, can work tech, but he can also work grid and pit road.  Have you ever stood in the control tower with Brandon Fleming and started a race (I spent Sunday afternoon doing that very thing), what a freakin’ rush! Brandon is a great teacher.  Have you seen Amy Finn at the race track?  If she is not working registration, you will see her in Grid, in a golf cart, getting starting grids from T & S, to parking cars at Tech, to handing out Trophies at impound.  She runs circles around the rest of us.  And then don’t forget about those workers that you wave to at the end of each race standing on corners.  Not only are they looking out for your safety, but for the safety of every driver and car on the race track.    You too can come out to help!  And the best part is that we do not charge you for all the fun we promise that you will have.  Scott “Sparky” Farrell, the Chief of F&C is working very close with Homestead in order to schedule a worker school. Want to help out?  See Sparky.

Following our November event at PBIR, we have elections coming up and our end of the year banquet.  We look forward to seeing everyone at this busy time of the year!

In Memory of Al Capuano
John Zuccarelli RE, Bob Ricker Asst. RE, and Mike Finn Race Director attended the SEDIV mid-year meeting in July, 2012.  They campaigned for and won approval to name the Southeast Division Worker of the Year Award in Honor of Al Capuano.  Al meant so very much to our region and this is just one more way to keep his legacy alive.  Thank you John, Bob, and Mike.
