The
Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) (www.scca.com)
was founded in February, 1944. The first issue of Sportwagen came out a month
later, including the SCCA Constitution, which stated the club's purpose as being "to
foster the preservation and operation of sport cars, to act as an authentic source
of information thereupon, and to provide events for these cars and their owners."
The Florida Region became active in 1952 as the 11th region in the nation. Membership
was restricted to those of "good moral character" who owned or were
interested in sports cars and subscribed to the SCCA's principles and were proposed to
membership by two other members in good standing and the regional executive. The
Florida Region's reincorporation of the club in 1979 essentially restated much of
the founding language of the original 1952 corporate papers. Persons of note who
joined in the reincorporation were then regional executive K.P. Jones, Meredydd
Francke, and LouElla Cook, along with ten others.

The following are some of the different activities within the SCCA:
SCCA
Pro Racing
SCCA Pro Racing is professional road racing
that is the most visible of the many SCCA activities, as 700-plus competitors, ranging
from the novice to the top road racers in the nation, race in one of 11 series.
The Trans-Am® Championship is
SCCA Pro Racing's® most notable property, featuring many of the biggest names
in North American road racing competing for big prize money in races carried on
live TV.
Club
Racing
Club Racing is
amateur racing at its best. There are classes for street cars, formula cars and
sports racers. For the budget-conscious weekend warrior there is the SCCA Spec
Racer® Ford, along with Improved Touring classes for slightly modified low-cost
street cars and the popular Formula Vee open-wheel class. You get the training
you need at SCCA Driver Schools and can choose competition at either Regional
or National events in your area. National champions are crowned each October at
the famed SCCA Valvoline
Runoffs® held at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Solo
(a.k.a. "Autocross")
The fastest man or woman wins as you test your driving skills on the track around pylons
(Solo2).
Solo events are driving skill
contests that emphasize the driver's ability and the car's handling
characteristics. There are classes for all types of street and race cars and competition
as relaxed or intense as you wish. National Champions are crowned each year at
the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championship in Topeka, Kansas. There's also
the challenging
ProSolo series, which features a drag racing start and competition
on mirror image courses and offers awards to event winners and year-end champions.
SCCA
Road Rally and Rally Cross
This kind of time and distance competition got the SCCA going
more than 50 years ago. It's still going strong and easy to see
why. All you need are the family wheels - be it sports car or
pickup - a navigator and the urge to beat the clock. Rallies are
run on public roads, and there are classes for everyone from beginners
to mad-hatter experts. (Rally)
